The SSD will erase them (it sets all the cells to 1) when it sees fit, usually not immediately. The built in garbage collection is usually sufficient if you leave a lot of space free. Its better to look at this as a two level problem, because it is: The OS Level HDDs dont give a shit. The OS takes advantage of this by treating it as a random access device. When the OS deletes something, it just writes to the directory file containing it, removing that files entry in its directory file. The filesystem also maintains a block availability map, sometimes called a bitmap, so the OS knows which parts of the disk are free. As far as the SSD is concerned, a file in no directory is still a file it has to maintain. It cant even read files The space is still available, however, because the OS is free to direct a write command wherever it chooses. The SSD Level SSDs are flash based, and flash based storage can only write by reprogramming the entire block. Technically, they can set a cell to 0 at any time, but never back to 1 without putting every cell in the block back to 1: They never do this, because its impractical in the real world.
